Sadly, all my (300+) fish crows have left me til next winter; I only feed a few a day now but the damn laughing gulls seem to want to take their place. We've (crows & I) seemed to have worked out a system for keeping the gulls out. I've never seen so many roost at once as in your video, just beautiful! I thought they were starlings at first! Thanks for sharing.

Fish Crows have expanded their range northward along major rivers--they like water. They've been nesting in low numbers here in southern Illinois for a while now. I love their sound; seems as though it doesn't take much energy to produce, yet it carries very well.

Someone should get the park administration to post signs by the roadways alerting drivers to watch out for the tortoises! The gopher tortoise is a protected species in Florida. I lived there 5 years and saw many gophers crushed along the highways. Very sad. They're so harmless, these boulder-like vegetarians.

Last I read, despite anatomically complete auditory sensory apparatus, chelonians have never been shown to respond to air borne sound. Sounds like you have observed tortoises to awaken in response to sound. True? If so, a pretty simple experimental demonstration might make a significant publication. Interested in collaborating?

I second netcanoers' comments; interesting & well presented. Barefoot beach preserve? in S.W. Florida between Collier & Lee county right? I used to Live on Marco Island ; ) A unique albeit developed area. But about those turtles...those close-up shots especially at 2:00...what an intimidating looking creature. I'm glad that they only grow to 14" or so rather than 10 feet in length. Otherwise they would've taken over or been hunted to extinction.

It somewhat depends on what they are eating, if they are well hydrated and if the ambient temperature is optimal. In general they eliminate daily or every few days if they are warm, eating and healthy. Often tortoises will eliminate when put in water especially if they start to drink.

When it rains, it will make the soil soft enough for the hatchlings to emerge. They are born with strong front legs and claws. They will emerge singly even hours or days apart.
